About Medcyclopaedia

The past decade has seen an explosion of knowledge in science and medicine, with medical imaging and its new technologies being one of the disciplines where this expansion has been more evident. For the general radiologists, it is not only becoming well-nigh impossible to keep up with this wealth of information, but also increasingly difficult to identify those advances with genuine practical implications for everyday practice.

Therefore, we have brought together international leaders from various fields of diagnostic and therapeutic imaging. We have asked them to use their expertise and experience to select those elements of modern knowledge they believe to be essential to the practising radiologist. Together with their assistant editors they have arranged this base of knowledge in an encyclopaedic form from A to Z.

In this way, with the present Internet version, our goal is to bring today’s knowledge to your fingertips.

For the general radiologist this provides a wide spectrum of important information in as much detail as space allows, for the specialist it gives an update in areas outside his/her focus of experience. It also serves as an invaluable source of information for clinicians, radiographers (technicians), pharmacists, nurses, physiotherapists, and other paramedical health care professionals. It is also a useful reference work for medical physicists, hospital managers, medical suppliers and medical publishers.

NICER
Based on a collaboration between Lund University, Sweden and Nycomed Amersham Oslo, Norway (now Amersham Health, UK), a global programme for continuing education in radiology has been undertaken in the 10-year period 1991-2001. It has been highly successful and met with great appreciation and support from the world radiological community and radiological organisations.

The following has been achieved:
- 52 courses have been given in 22 countries and on all continents
- 16,000 participants from 65 countries have attended the courses
- 120,000 copies of educational material under 12 different titles and in 8 languages have been distributed to virtually all countries of the world
- The latest publication effort, the Encyclopaedia of Medical Imaging, has been published 1998-2001 in 8 large book volumes comprising about 18,000 entry words, over 3,500 pages and more than 10,000 images

The market in the medical diagnostics industry has changed and the need for high quality educational programmes today is met, to a large extent, by the growing number of educational courses arranged by the radiological societies. In a mutual understanding between Lund University and Amersham Health, it has been decided that the programme will now be closed down, in that no more courses will be given after 2001, while the Encyclopaedia will be published in further, digital editions.

We are now proud to introduce you, our clients, to a novel publishing venture in diagnostic imaging: The Encyclopaedia of Medical Imaging – Medcyclopaedia - on the Internet.

Lund University
Lund University is Scandinavia's most complete university, and is engaged in teaching and research on a wide front a according to a European tradition which goes back many hundreds of years.

Today's and tomorrow's society demands that we can understand and manage complicated problems and relations.

Education is a life-long process in which universities are playing an increasingly important role.

The courses offered at Lund University are changing constantly in order to meet these needs, while the research being pursued is directed towards new problems of relevance for modern society.

Today, Lund University, which has departments in Lund, Malmö and Helsingborg, offers a rich, classical student life with fraternities, student societies and cultural activities of many kinds. The University is also part of the modern, international life offered by the various cities and the southern region of Sweden and their proximity to Denmark and the rest of Europe.
